Pupils from Morpeth School and Globe Road Primary School visited our
Memorial on Monday 9th November to lay wreaths and flowers in memory of
their former pupils that died in the Bethnal Green tube shelter disaster.
A beautiful poem was read out by one of the pupils and then everyone held a
minute's silence before looking at the individual plaques and finding the
names of those that had attended their school and died so young.
The children were able to talk to survivors Alf Morris and Babs Clark who
went to Morpeth during WW2 and to Derek Spicer about his brother and sister
that died in the disaster.
When they returned to Morpeth School Derek told
the history class about his time at the school and Babs explained what
happened to her and her family on that fateful night of 3rd March 1943.
school kindly provided lunch for the visitors.
